Week 11

Good evening, parents!

Kindergartners and first graders have jumped back into the week and started to create some truly beautiful new projects.

Kindergartners have been learning the element of value and are learning to distinguish different shades of gray, from white to black.  They have been introduced to the concept of negative space in an exercise of coloring a starry sky.  They colored the dark sky all around the stars and noticed how the contrast between the black sky and the white stars made the stars stand out.  Their first big project of the quarter, however, is a drawing of a polar bear on black construction paper.  They have been using white oil pastels to accomplish this, and using this new medium has been fun and exciting for them!

First graders are being introduced to the element of texture.  After last week's crayon rubbings (which they delighted in), the students brainstormed about the textures of different animals' skin and fur.  This prepared them for the project we started this week.  We have been drawing outlines of lizards, which will later be filled in with crayon rubbings to make them look scaly  Most of the students have never drawn lizards before, but they are stepping up to the task with admirable courage!

This was a great of learning, both for the kindergartners and first graders.  I'm so proud of the growth they've achieved and look forward very much to their continued accomplishments next week!
