Week 10

Good afternoon, parents, and welcome back to another quarter!

Our kindergartners and first graders seemed happy and refreshed from their much-deserved break.  They all work so hard, and it's great to see that they've enjoyed their time off.

Kindergartners kicked off the quarter learning about value: the lightness or darkness of an object.  They began an exercise in identifying negative space and contrast by coloring a picture of the night sky, while leaving the stars white.  Next week, they will begin working with a new medium: oil pastels, as they create a white-on-black drawing of a polar bear.  They are catching onto the new concepts really quickly, and I look forward to the development of their new knowledge.  A fun exercise to do at home would be to color a page of a coloring book using only one crayon, but creating contrast throughout the picture by applying different pressures to each object colored.

First graders will be learning about texture this quarter.  They discovered the new concept through crayon rubbings and had lots of fun exploring the textures of various materials around the classroom.  Next week, they will apply this new skill to a larger project based on the artistic style of Eric Carle.  A fun exercise for the students to do at home involves taking a large piece of butcher paper or newsprint and using textured objects throughout the house to dip into paint and stamp onto the paper.   Various items to use would include dry pasta, leaves, feathers, flowers, or even halved fruits and vegetables.  This is a great way for the students to learn more about texture in a fun, unconventional way.

I am very proud of each of my students; they jumped headlong back into learning, despite the fact that their relaxing break was over.  It's never easy to go back to school, but our students have risen to the occasion with gusto and determination.  Bravo!
