Week 5

Good evening, parents!

It was hard for all of us to come back to work/school after a nice, long weekend, but our students have jumped back into learning with gusto!

Kindergartners have finished (or very nearly finished) cutting out all their geometric shapes and have started gluing them down to create a very lovely and colorful scene.  This is the first time they've used glue sticks in class, and they are learning how to use the glue sticks appropriately and effectively.  Several students have run out of glue already, so make sure to ask your children if they need a replacement.  Most, if not all, of our kindergartners have figured out the scene they are creating and are excited to see the final result.  The scene we are forming is an adaptation of the cover of The Shape of Things by Dayle Ann Dodds.  It includes a house, hills, and a windmill in a sunny landscape.  The kindergartners' work is progressing beautifully, and they should be very proud of themselves!

First graders have finished their lovely swan watercolor line drawings and have started working on another project involving lines: Pablo Picasso's 1922 Mother and Child.  Picasso's work involves a line drawing (like Matisse's Swan) but adds a layer of watercolor to fill in and complete the scene.  Our first graders have observed the drawing and noticed that the lines and colors in the scene convey peace, calmness, love, and affection.  They have started their own versions of the scene, using pencils and tracing paper to trace a black line replica of the work.  Tracing is a new skill for them, and it is tricky to keep the tracing paper lined up with the drawing underneath.  Our students, however, are concentrated and persistent in their work, and it is definitely paying off!

Well done to all our kindergartners and first graders this week!  They are growing so beautifully in fine motor skills, artistic appreciation, and virtue; you should be very proud of them.  Have a great weekend!
